Can I Sue For Asbestos Exposure?
Generally, you can’t sue for asbestos exposure unless it causes an injury such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. If you are suffering from asbestos related health complications due to exposure or lost a loved one to mesothelioma and/or other asbestos-related diseases, you may be entitled to compensation.
State laws determine who can file a lawsuit and other asbestos claims on behalf of a deceased victim. Generally, the following people may be eligible:
-
A spouse or life partner
-
Children
-
Financial dependents
-
Parents or grandparents
Todd J. Hollis Law can help navigate your asbestos lawsuit or claims, and help estimate how much you can recover as compensation.
Pittsburgh’s History with Asbestos Exposure
Pennsylvania currently ranks third in the nation for mesothelioma deaths and fourth in the nation for deaths from asbestosis.
Pennsylvanians died from mesothelioma
died from asbestosis
Pennsylvania counties reported deaths from mesothelioma and asbestosis.
Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 3,092 Pennsylvanians died of mesothelioma from 1999 to 2017, and another 568 died from asbestosis. Additional CDC records from this period list 36 Pennsylvania counties that reported deaths from mesothelioma and asbestosis.
Pennsylvania has deep historical ties to industries that placed workers at high risk of asbestos exposure, particularly in construction, manufacturing, and power generation. The state is also one of the few in the U.S. with a history of asbestos mining, with four known mines in its southeastern region. These mines contained amphibole asbestos, a particularly dangerous subtype known as crocidolite, which is linked to life-threatening conditions like asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
Pittsburgh, with its long industrial history, saw many workers exposed to asbestos in steel mills, shipyards, and the construction of power plants. The coal mining that dominated western Pennsylvania also contributed to asbestos exposure risks, particularly for those involved in mining operations or living nearby.
Even schools in the state were not immune. Asbestos contamination in Pennsylvania schools has been an ongoing issue for decades, causing concern for parents and educators. In 2020, three school district officials faced felony charges for allegedly covering up asbestos and lead contamination, underscoring the serious and lasting impact of this hazardous material.
For Pennsylvania residents and workers, asbestos exposure was often a part of daily life. If you or a loved one were affected by asbestos-related illness, fighting for you is what I do. Todd J. Hollis Law can help you seek the justice and compensation you deserve.
